These phones can only work when you have internet service.  This is a consideration if you plan to use this as your only telephone which I do not recommend.

Skype has been an internet telephone innovator for many years.  Their service is free when done computer to computer.  Time charges apply to calls made to or from land telephones.

You make a deposit and keep a bank of minutes like any phone card style service. You can purchase new minutes at any time.

Skype In allows you to have a landline phone number and for people to call you at this number.

Skype Out allows you to call from your Skype account to a landline or mobile phone number anywhere in the world.

Not only can you use the cool phones at home on your wireless network but also when you are out and about at the increasing number of public wifi networks that are available. Great for international travel. Check into your hotel in Tokyo with wifi and have instant phone service with low cost international calling.

Talk free anywhere in the world to your friends using Skype too.

If you and your friend are both on Skype phones and one is in a cafe with wifi in Paris and you are on a Washington Ferry with wifi you can both talk for free.

At home I like to use a bluetooth headset.

You can listen to music on your computer and Skype will interrupt the song and you can take the call on your bluetooth headset.

Note: Skype phones are not cell phones and do not work everywhere or while driving. Skype phones work from internet wifi or wireless networks on 802.11.
